Oral and Maxillofacial surgery is a dental specialty that focuses on a variety of surgical procedures to treat diseases, fix injuries or correct defects of the face, jaw or mouth.  The procedures help many reduce pain, fix deformities and restore function.

One of the most common oral surgical procedure performed in dentistry is impacted (Wisdom) teeth removal surgery.

If a tooth fails to emerge, or emerges only partially, it is considered to be impacted. Patients frequently develop problems associated with impacted wisdom teeth, which are the most common form of impacted teeth that need removal. You may also notice swelling or bleeding. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause headaches, nerve pain, and orthodontic problems.

Your dentist may recommend that you have all four wisdom teeth removed at once. However, if one set of your wisdom teeth remains healthy, talk to your dentist about the benefits and risks of leaving them in place.

Who Needs Impacted Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

Sometimes wisdom teeth simply grow the wrong way. Wisdom teeth can become fully or partially impacted. You may feel a small portion of the tooth erupt through the gums if you have a partially impacted tooth. The dentist must open the gum line to remove impacted teeth during wisdom teeth surgery.

If your x-rays show horizontal wisdom teeth, you may need surgery quickly to avoid orthodontic damage. As wisdom teeth begin to move, they can push your other teeth. As wisdom teeth push against other teeth, you may feel pain, as well. Patients that have had braces may end up with crooked teeth once again if the wisdom teeth do not come out in time.

Your dentist may recommend that you have all four wisdom teeth removed at once. Some patients, however, only have problems with their upper or lower wisdom teeth. If one set of your wisdom teeth remains healthy, talk to your dentist about the benefits and risks of leaving
them in place.

Preparing for Impacted Wisdom Tooth Removal

An impacted wisdom tooth can occasionally turn into an emergency. By booking an appointment to see your dentist as soon as you see indications of wisdom teeth eruption, you can prevent such an emergency. Before your surgery, you would require an exam and a surgical consultation. During the consultation, the dentist discusses sedation options, the procedure, and aftercare. Furthermore, plan to take a few days off work or school, as you prepare for recovery by purchasing cold compresses and soft foods.

Recovery From Wisdom Tooth Extraction

After an extraction, you should feel better in two to three days. Nonetheless, many patients require 5 days of rest following surgical removal of the wisdom tooth. After having your impacted wisdom teeth removed, you should feel ready to get back to your regular activities in 10 to 14 days. After your procedure, we recommend that you schedule routine follow-up visits with your dentist to check for complications. It takes several months for the socket to fully heal.
